What is a Perinatal Hypnotherapist?

Perinatal Hypnotherapists are trained specifically to use clinical hypnosis, mindfulness and meditation to support parents with a range of issues from pre conception to two years post partum. This can include problems with conceiving or difficult IVF journeys, pregnancy & baby loss, Hyperemesis Gravidarum, birth trauma, NICU stays, sleep deprivation, difficulty feeding, post natal depression and perinatal anxiety.

When I retrained as a hypnotherapist some 14 years ago now, it was never with the intention of specialising in perinatal mental health, even though I was a new mum. My son was 3 and when I started my training in 2009 I wasn’t even pregnant with my second.

I spent the first few years trying to build my therapy practice by appealing to every problem from weight loss to panic attacks, smoking cessation and phobias and everything in between.

Back then I lived in Hounslow in West London and so my clientele was very diverse. I saw a lot of stressed out Indian businessmen.

I observed that I was their 'last chance' at resolving their problem, because often these men had tried ‘everything’ to control their habits, fears and behaviours but were defeated every time.

The problem was mostly that they had tried too hard to control themselves, made themselves wrong, ashamed and more stressed than ever.

It’s almost impossible to solve any problem from this state of mind.

The problem with working with everyone and every problem was that it was hard to get experience and confidence about one area of practice.  It was also harder when marketing or promoting myself when speaking to a generic problem like stress for example because it’s different for everyone.

Then when I was off on maternity leave with my 2nd baby in 2011 I started teaching hypnobirthing antenatal courses and from there I began to grow a therapy practice around the perinatal life stage.

My hypnobirthing clients started turning into hypnotherapy clients when they realised that I could support them with recovery from birth trauma, easing hyperemesis gravidarum, post natal depression, anxiety and even fertility issue. I even supported a father to overcome his needle phobia.

I closed my general hypnotherapy site; Heath Hypnotherapy in 2015. The same year that I left corporate life and became a full time therapist.

Without having carved out a niche before hand I doubt that it would have happened.

11 years on and I am so grateful for those hypnobirthing classes.
